Udyam Registration in 2026: A Plain Walkthrough for First-Timers
Udyam registration is the official MSME registration in India. It is free, takes about ten minutes at udyamregistration.gov.in, and is required for CGTMSE, GeM, Interest Subvention, CLCSS, and almost every state subsidy. Most owners can finish it on a phone in one sitting.
Before you start
Three things speed up the form. The proprietor's Aadhaar number and the mobile linked to it for OTP. PAN of the proprietor or the company. GSTIN if the business is GST-registered.
A bank account number and IFSC will be asked, so keep a cancelled cheque or a passbook page open. If the business is recent and has not opened a bank account yet, the current account opening can wait until after Udyam.
Pick the right entity type at the start
The first dropdown asks for the type of organisation. The choice matters because each type drives a different PAN field and different documents downstream.
A solo owner picks Proprietorship and submits Aadhaar plus PAN of the proprietor. A partnership firm picks Partnership and submits the firm PAN. A private limited company picks Private Limited and submits the company PAN with the CIN.
The classification fields
The form asks for investment in plant and machinery and turnover. Both come from the most recent ITR for a running business. A new business that has not filed ITR can self-declare. The system reads PAN-linked filings automatically once a PAN is entered, so the number that appears is what the system saw.
Cross either limit, investment or turnover, and you move up a category. The bigger of the two decides. Investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore is Micro. Investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore is Small. Investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore is Medium.
NIC code: pick what you actually do
The NIC code defines the activity classification. Most owners pick too broad a code like 4711 for retail trade or 4690 for non-specialised wholesale, then run into issues when banks want a more specific classification.
A tea stall picks 5610 for restaurants and mobile food service. A laundry picks 9601. A small textile unit doing cotton spinning picks 1311. The NIC drop-down on the portal searches by keyword, so typing the real activity gives the right code in one or two tries.
Submit, OTP, certificate
After all fields are filled, the form sends a final Aadhaar OTP. On submission the certificate is generated instantly with a 12-digit Udyam Registration Number. The PDF can be downloaded from the same screen.
The certificate is permanent and does not expire. The portal pulls fresh ITR and GST data each year to update classification, so a small unit that grows past ₹10 crore turnover is automatically reclassified as Small.
When the OTP does not come
The most common Udyam problem is the Aadhaar OTP failing to arrive. The cause is almost always an outdated mobile number on the UIDAI database. The portal sends the OTP only to the Aadhaar-linked mobile, not whatever number you type.
The fix is to update the mobile at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The update takes about 24 hours to propagate. After that the OTP comes through within 30 seconds.
After registration
The first practical use of the Udyam certificate is opening a current account, which gets easier with the URN on file. The second is registering on TReDS for invoice discounting. The third is enrolling on GeM as a verified seller, which opens up government tenders.
For CGTMSE-backed lending and CLCSS subsidy applications, the URN goes straight into the bank's loan file. There is no second registration needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam different from Udyog Aadhaar?
Yes. Udyog Aadhaar was the old MSME registration system, replaced by Udyam in July 2020. Existing Udyog Aadhaar holders had to migrate to Udyam before March 2022. New registrations only happen on Udyam.
Can a freelancer or consultant register on Udyam?
Yes. A solo consultant running as a proprietorship can register. Pick the NIC code that matches your trade. A freelance designer codes under 7410. A private tutor uses 8559. An IT consultant goes under 6202. The benefit is access to CGTMSE-backed loans and Interest Subvention.
Does Udyam need GST?
GST is only mandatory in Udyam for businesses where GST registration itself is mandatory under the GST law. A small unit under the ₹40 lakh turnover threshold can register without a GSTIN.
How do I update my Udyam certificate?
Log in at udyamregistration.gov.in using the URN and OTP. Most fields can be updated directly. Activity changes require a fresh NIC selection. The certificate regenerates instantly after updates.
